ORGANISATIONS AT ÅNGSTRÖM LABORATORY
Ångström Laboratory is home to seven departments, several research centres and a number of different units. All major departments and units at Ångström Laboratory are listed below.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy
Research in physics and astronomy at Uppsala University touches on everything from the infinitesimal to the enormous. Conducted research examines energy supply, climate development, new materials and the universe, and the department’s courses and educational programmes reflect this entire spectrum.
The Department of Information Technology
The Department of Information Technology conducts education and research in computer science and information technology in the broadest terms. The organisation works with a variety of questions, from the design of computer systems through programming of computers, storage and handling of data to data mining and methods for using computers in different contexts.
The Department of Chemistry – Ångström
While the Department of Chemistry – Ångström focuses mainly on materials and energy, the range of courses offered and the research reflect the broad scope of chemistry as a subject. Within the Chemistry section of Uppsala University, there are nine different research programmes that focus on different areas of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, molecular biomimetics, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, structural chemistry and synthetic molecular chemistry.
The Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at Uppsala University is growing. Since the 1990s research has expanded greatly and now covers a large number of highly relevant mathematical areas. The breadth of the research is also reflected in the educational programme, which focuses on both general education in mathematics and in-depth study of the subject.
The Department of Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on electrical enginering science solutions for important social challenges.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering strive to find technical solutions that improve the environment and other living conditions for people.
The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering
The Department conducts research and education within Civil Engineering, Built Environment, Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management. Common to both our research and our education is that it is linked to sustainable development and that we have extensive collaboration with society and business.
eSSENCE is a strategic collaboration programme in e-Science among three Swedish universities with strong traditions of high quality e-Scientific Research: Uppsala University, Lund University and Umeå University.
International Science Programme
ISP assists low and lower-middle income countries to build and strengthen research capacity and higher education in the basic sciences chemistry, physics and mathematics. ISP is also entrusted with coordination assignments in bilateral research programs.
SNIC – Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing
The Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) is a national research infrastructure that provides support and large-scale resources for computation and storage to Swedish researchers.
UPMARC – Uppsala Programming for Multicore Architectures Research Center (2008–2017)
Uppsala Programming for Multicore Architectures Research Center (UPMARC) was a long-term, interdisciplinary research programme in parallel computer systems. The task was to identify and tackle the basic challenges that enable all programmers to make use of the performance of parallel computing.
UPPMAX – Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science
Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (UPPMAX) is Uppsala University’s resource for high performance computers, large-scale data storage and knowledge in high performance computing. UPPMAX is one of six centres in the national organisation Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC). UPPMAX is also part of the SweGrid national grid.
Upptech is a venture in cross-border technology run by the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University. The aim is to promote exciting development projects between the University’s world-class technology research and business or other external partners for a better and sustainable world.
Update Computer Club
Update is the association for all students/employees at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala who are interested in computers. The association deals with computers in all their forms – hardware, software, modern and old, various computer architectures, Unix/Linux, multi-user systems, programming and more. Update also arranges lectures, exhibitions and projects and possesses a large collection of new and historical computers, components, documentation and software.
Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students (UTN)
The Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students is a student union that protects and monitors the interests of students of the Faculty of Science and Technology in areas related to their studies. These issues can be purely educational or deal with students’ social environment or working life. The Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students strives to work closely with impacted students to protect their interests. In the student union’s highest decision-making body, the council, students that represent their section make all decisions.
Campus Management is a service unit responsible for common functions of the departments and units within the Campus Management area.
The Cryogenic Facility produces and distributes liquid helium and liquid nitrogen for research at the University. It also provides test cryostats for experiments at the Facility for Research Instrumentation and Accelerator Development (FREIA) Laboratory. The Cryo Centre receives support from a grant by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Each year about 14,000 litres of liquid helium and 100,000 litres of liquid nitrogen are distributed to users at Uppsala University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and other institutes in Uppsala.
Myfab is a distributed national research infrastructure for cleanroom based research and development in microtechnology, nanoscience and materials research. Together with Uppsala University, also KTH, Chalmers and Lund University contribute to this comprehensive infrastructure, serving about 800 users with a similar number of instruments. Myfab is open for academic research as well as industrial development.
The Student Services office exists for all students at Ångström. It provides answers to general questions about your studies, career counselling, signed transcripts of records, help with numbers for degree projects and preliminary exams from courses at Ångström. The unit is also responsible for the Faculty’s work on equal treatment of students, programme administration and programme study guidance for the engineering programmes.
The Ångström Library is one of many subject libraries at Uppsala University. The library provides service to students and staff at Uppsala University, but the public can also access large parts of the library’s collections and services. The library is also home to Ångström Makerspace.
Ångström Workshop is the largest and most modern mechanical workshop at a Swedish university. It develops instruments and makes prototypes for research teams at Uppsala University and other Swedish universities as well as for national and international infrastructures.
Institute of Space Physics – Uppsala
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Uppsala is located at Ångström Laboratory and integrated with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University.
Tandem Laboratory is a special institution within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University and a national infrastructure. It conducts world-class research using high energy ion beams. The laboratory is a national infrastructure supported by the Swedish Research Council (VR-RFI) and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF)
